I am very happy to work with BANCS Microfinance and be a part of all what it does and accomplishes here in Uganda. Our team invests a lot of time in practical training for women because so often they are overlooked due to lack of education and the lower social status of women here in Africa. The way we work is by stretching out to establish groups in their home areas where we are able to provide services and training for them and they have a chance to learn new things right where they are instead of them having to travel long distances. As we discuss with them in the groups, these women open their hearts and share with us about the huge challenges they face in their homes and in their finances. I remember one woman, we’ll call her Esther, who told us how she had saved money for a year and kept it hidden in her “home bank”, a special box under her bed. When it disappeared, she was afraid to confront the husband. All of this happened because of her fear of going to an established banking institution. Now her children can receive the benefit because she can safely save with BANCS, learn to do a successful small business, and how to balance her books. It doesn’t stop with the training, but gets interesting during the monitoring exercise seeing our clients doing business with their neighbors, recording their business transactions, and making daily savings. This is why I am passionate about BANCS and why I am desiring and determined for us to train more and more women.

As I write this, we have given out over sixty loans to pastors. (The average pastors in Uganda earns less than a dollar a day). I am not aware of anything like what we are doing anywhere – a microfinance bank teamed up with a ministers network (HCI-Uganda) to help the pastors break out of poverty. In my opinion, this is genuinely significant in that we have added a practical element to our gospel message that impacts the pastor, his family, and even their congregations. We believe what happens for the pastor will “trickle” down to the church members, with the net result being a more greatly empowered church! Our goal is for every pastor to at least get to $5.00 a day.

Our goal is to empower ministers and churches through BANCS Microfinance, believing that the key to helping their churches move out of poverty lies in helping each pastor and his family to move out of poverty, thus setting a new standard in the church that church members will hopefully strive for. This process of transforming lives and churches really does begin with changing the mindset of the pastors, which is why in our HCI meetings we feed them a steady diet of testimonies from their peers who are successfully ministering and doing business to raise income for their family support.

This outreach plays a vital part in our vision of “transformation through empowerment”. (Another way to say that would be “dominion through discipleship”.) We have survived some rough water due to several factors – an election earlier this year which led to runaway inflation is on of the main things. But, praise God we are still here and are genuinely stronger than ever. We are projecting solid growth for 2012 and believe we will triple or quadruple the number of people we give loans to, along with the training that goes along with it., which really amounts to discipleship classes. I am particularly excited about on of our groups which is comprised of nearly 100 ministers.

Poverty is unquestionably the single greatest challenge facing African families, communities, and churches. Over 700 million people in Africa live on less than $2.00 per day. I believe microfinance is one of the most powerful vehicles available today to help the poor with long-term solutions. Microfinance is built upon the philosophy of helping people break out of poverty by giving them a hand-up instead of a hand-out. Rather than creating dependency, it empowers them to help themselves. It not only teaches people to fish but helps them build a fish market! In BANCS, we don’t just stop with just giving small business loans – we also provide basic business training as a prerequisite for receiving a loan, followed up with on-site visits. It’s important for the loans to be repaid, but our main goal for each client is to move out of poverty spiritually and financially. That is why we are so focused on holistic training.

Many of you have asked if you can give directly to fund loans for the poor. Yes! With help from our U.S. partner, Harvest Churches International (HCI), we have the capacity to receive your gifts designated for microfinance! 100% of your gift will be used for loans, and your contributions will be tax-deductible. We presently have over 400 loan applications pending. Whatever the amount, just know that your gift will make a difference, (click here to give).

Regardless of the size of your gift to our microfinance outreach, it will never be spent, but will remain in what is called the “loan portfolio” only being used for loans. Think about it – over a ten year period your gift will be loaned, re-paid, loaned again, and so on for a minimum of 20 loan cycles. If you give $100.00, that is actually like giving $2000.00 and will help at least 20 families have an opportunity to move out of poverty. That is the power of microfinance giving!

Thank you in advance for helping us empower the poor here in Uganda. May God abundantly bless you!

Sincerely,

Mike Croslow
